Implants
Dental implants are a confusing topic for many people. Whether it is simply not knowing what dental implants are, or not understanding the process of dental implants, there is much that can be learned. To start with, there are over 50 manufacturers of dental implants and materials, which can then be used to create restorations, like crowns and abutments.

Did you know that nearly 3 million people have dental implants, and that that number continues to grow by half a million more, each year? More than 35 million Americans have no teeth whatsoever, and over 115 million people in the United States are missing at least one teeth. In fact, by age 50, the average American has lost an average of 12 teeth! What does this all mean? That there are literally hundred of millions of Americans, who could benefit from dental implants.

What Are Dental Implants?

Put simply, dental implants are a titanium post, that is surgically inserted into the appropriate problem area. Implants are typically inserted into the jawbone, and allows a dentist to mount replacement teeth, or even a bridge, into the area.

An easy way to think of dental implants, is like a root, that is directly inserted beneath the gum line. Unlike dentures, dental implants won’t come loose. Another positive aspect of dental implants, is that they do not need to be anchored to other teeth. Some dental procedures, like bridges, do include the process of being anchored to other teeth. Dental implants are also an easy, painless way to improve your health, self confidence, and self esteem.

Endosteal Implants
There are two types of implants which the ADA (American Dental Association) deems to be safe. The first of these, are endosteal implants. Endosteal implants are directly inserted into the jawbone, making them one of the most direct types of implants. From here, a second surgery connects a post to the implant.

Lastly, an artificial tooth (or multiple teeth) are added. They can also be grouped into a denture, or a bridge. Endosteal implants are one of the most commonly used dental implants for two-stage procedures, and offer an alternative to detachable dentures or bridges. There are also three main types of endosteal implants, mainly bladed, smooth (cylinder), and threaded (screw).

Subperiosteal Implants

Subperiosteal implants are essentially a metal frame that fits onto the jawbone below the gum tissue. The frame then becomes fixed to the jawbone, as the healing process occurs. As is the case with endosteal implants, artificial teeth are then attached to posts, which extend through the gums.

Subperiosteal implants are not placed into the bone at all, and as a result, in some situations they can be advantageous. In patients who have lost large amounts of bone tissue from their jawbone, or patients with shallow jawbones, subperiosteal implants may be required. Surgery and bone grafts can sometimes also be used, but these options can be both costly, uncomfortable, and time-intensive. This is one reason why sometimes subperiosteal implants may be preferred.

Dental implants are very safe, and anyone can be reassured that going in for dental implants is a very safe process. How Can I Avoid Problems With My Teeth?
Taking care of one’s teeth is truly a lifelong journey. It starts by brushing regularly. 2-3 times a day is ideal, and the ADA (American Dental Association) also recommends using a toothpaste with fluoride. Here are some of the toothpastes we recommend.

Brushing is also key because it helps eliminate plaque and food, which creates a sticky white residue on your teeth, and contains large amounts of bacteria. When it comes to choosing a toothbrush, there are many different choices. Some of our patients prefer electric toothbrushes, others do not. There are many different toothbrushes on the market, but this electric toothbrush model is one of our favorites.

Another key step in maintaining optimal dental health, is flossing regularly. It is best to buy floss in bulk, if you are looking to not only save money, but to never be without it, so you can always have fresh and clean teeth. There are a number of great flossing options on the market, and in fact there is very little difference between most varieties. One of our favorites can be found here.

We also recommend daily use of a mouthwash, usually after every brushing. This is – in our opinion – the best mouthwash on the market. Eating a diet low in sugar, and high in nutrients, is also critical in maintaining good dental health. Be sure to also drink plenty of water, and cut out beverages which can cause harm to the enamel of your teeth, like soda (even diet).
