Patient Information

Getting ready for your new smile.

Since every patient is unique, it’s important to understand that everyone’s experience with dental implants may be a little bit different. However, for the most part, the “typical” plan for implants is comprised of three parts: a comprehensive exam, the day of the procedure, and recovery.

  • Comprehensive Exam
A thorough exam by a specialist in the field of prosthodontics is the first required step. You will receive a complete dental exam that documents every aspect of patient information and dental health. We will also take your full medical history to ensure a safe and pleasant dental implant experience that produces the best possible result. Early in the process, we will make impressions of your teeth so our lab technicians can get started working on your new teeth. You will even be able to choose the shade and shape of your teeth.
  • Day of the Procedure
You should arrive at By Design Dental Implant Center early, where one of our friendly patient navigators will greet you and escort you to a recovery room. Here, you may secure your personal belongings. A family member or friend may also wait in this area while you have your dental implant procedure. You will be escorted to the surgery room, where your oral surgeon and his staff will greet you. They will begin the procedure by placing you under conscious sedation. This will help to reduce any pain or discomfort. The sedation our surgeons use is safe and effective, with minimal after effects. Once under sedation, any existing teeth that need to be removed will be extracted by your surgeon. The surgeon will then place the implants. Next, the prosthodontist will make certain that the implants are placed correctly and, if needed, make any adjustments. When your implant procedure is complete, your next stop will be back to the recovery room. This is where you will rest until you come out of the sedation.
  • The Lab
While there, our lab technicians will finish creating and polishing your replacement teeth. During this time, most patients sleep. After you have fully recovered, you will proceed to a restorative operatory.  This is where your prosthodontist and his staff will custom fit your replacement teeth. Some patients can barely contain their emotions when they see their beautiful new smile for the first time.
Prepare to be amazed when you see your new smile!
  • Recovery
It’s normal to feel a bit of minor discomfort after you leave the center. This can be treated with pain medication available over the counter at any local drug store. Some swelling or bruising around the gums may also be present.
